The coronavirus pandemic has impacted live music and gigging for artists in the Lehigh Valley and across the country.
Fortunately, it hasn’t stopped local bands and musicians from cranking out new music.
That includes Mosey Beat and Bethlehem’s Smooth Retsina Glow.
The former is back with a new EP, Night Sun.
The songs here are a bit tighter and more focused than past Mosey Beat efforts.
While they lean heavily into the jam-band aesthetic that makes up the core of their sound, they do it with more of a refined flair. They know when to cut loose and also when to pull back.
Vocalist-guitarist Taylor O’Connor lays down some of his best guitar work yet. He channels his inner Carlos Santana on “Walking Blind.”
O’Connor also shows he’s coming into his own as a lyricist.
On the opening track, “Lift Our Eyes,” O’Connor bemoans society’s addiction to burying ourselves in technology while ignoring and not taking time to appreciate the world around us.
He is backed by the equally talented Blair O’Connor (drums) and Dave Abraham (bass). They continue to demonstrate why they are one of the best rhythm sections in the Lehigh Valley.
Night Sun is s a robust collection of tunes worth adding to your library.
On their latest single, “Memories Made,” Bethlehem’s Smooth Retsina Glow get funky by wrapping a catchy pop melody around a Noel Rodgers-style guitar hook.
Guitarist Colin Wolf leads the charge with some flashy fingerwork on the track.
Singer Sarah Stoll’s lilting vocals add a nice melodic layer to the song, which is propelled by the dynamic rhythm section of Jake Buxton and Nick Dejesso.
“Memories” is a solid, playlist-ready jam.
