Quentin Tarantino's Western drama The Hateful Eight boasts an all-star lineup of actors that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth and Jennifer Jason Leigh among the cast.

The film also features a priceless, 145-year-old Martin guitar. At least it did until the instrument was accidentally destroyed during production, reports Reverb.com.

According to the report, Russell was filming a scene in which his character grabs the six-string from Leigh's Daisy Domergue and smashes it to pieces -- in the process laying waste to a guitar dating back to the 1870s.

Dick Boak, director of the Martin Museum, archives and special projects for Upper Nazareth Township-based C.F. Martin & Co. archivist, responded to Reverb's report and called the incident an "accident." However, Boak said the manufacturer was unaware the instrument was going to be destroyed.

"We assumed that scaffolding or something fell on it," he told the site. "We understand things happen, but at the same time we can't take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed written into the script and that somebody just didn't tell the actor, this is all new information to us. We didn't know anything about the script or Kurt Russell not being told that it was a priceless, irreplaceable artifact from the Martin Museum."

Later in the report, Boak said Martin did not offer a replacement for the guitar. "As a result of the incident, the company will no longer loan guitars to movies under any circumstances," he said.
