Ahh, Musikfest.
The time of the year when every regional media outlet and blogger within a 50-mile radius of Bethlehem cranks out "best of," "can't miss" and other such lists in order to attract eyeballs (and, let's be honest, clicks) to their respective pages. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Well, yours truly happens to fall in the latter of those two groups. Besides, I don't want to be left out of the fun. That and I also enjoy putting together a good list ripe for dissection, discussion and debate.
So here it is, the list of lists, the prognostication of all prognosticators!
My picks for the 10 Lehigh Valley acts you do not want to miss during Musikfest 2017:
DAY 1 (FRIDAY, AUG. 4): TIM HARAKAL AND ZACH JONES
- When: 5 p.m.
- Where: Hotel Bethlehem Platz (North Side)
- Why: Singer-songwriter Tim Karakal's rich, velvety vocals float atop breezy, West Coast-style acoustic pop.
DAY 2 (SATURDAY, AUG. 5): STEFANIE JOHNSON BAND
- When: Noon, 1:30 p.m.
- Where: Main Street (North Side)
- Why: Country served with a healthy heaping of rock on the side. Lehigh Valley native Stefanie Johnson evokes a harder-edged Taylor Swift, without the frilly, bubblegum coating, and equal doses of heart.
DAY 3 (SUNDAY, AUG. 6): SUMMER SCOUTS
- When: 6 p.m.
- Where: Plaza Tropical (North Side)
- Why: High voltage power pop that punches you in the gut while putting serious boogie in your dancing shoes. Experience their infectious, electric, combustible musical energy for yourself.
DAY 4 (MONDAY, AUG. 7): PENTLEY HOLMES AND THE LUCID DREAMERS
- When: 4 p.m.
- Where: TD Community Stage (SteelStacks/Southside)
- Why: Pentley Holmes' smooth, laid-back swagger oozes cool and so, too, does his music. Case in point: the ridiculously catchy single "Shape Up," from the band's 2016 debut EP, Rip Out My Heart. Folk, soul and a touch of blues all rolled into one ear worm-worhty package.
DAY 5 (TUESDAY, AUG. 8): MOSEY BEAT
- When: 5, 7 p.m.
- Where: Main Street (North Side)
- Why: Are they funk? Prog rock? Jam band? The answer is all of the above. (Trust me, that's a good thing.) Phillipsburg's Mosey Beat will have you moving, grooving and shaking your moneymaker in 60 seconds or less.
DAY 6 (WEDNESDAY, AUG. 9): ALEX MERY & THE TOWNSMEN
- When: 9 p.m.
- Where: Lyrikplatz (SteelStacks/SouthSide)
- Why: Imagine, if you can, a Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, and Dashboard Confessional backyard hootenanny. The resulting sound that you conjure up in your head is a good starting point for the earnest folk-pop of Allentown's Alex Mery & The Townsmen.
DAY 7 (THURSDAY, AUG. 10): SLINGSHOT DAKOTA
- When: 9 p.m.
- Where: Plaza Tropical (North Side)
- Why: In 2016, Rolling Stone named the husband-and-wife duo of singer-keyboardist Carly Commando and drummer Tom Patterson one of its "10 New Artists You Need to Know" and for good reason. Slingshot Dakota brings to the stage a raw, passionate, punk rock angst anchored by Commando's lilting melodies and bursts of electronic fuzz.
DAY 8 (FRIDAY, AUG. 11): DEAR ANNA
- When: 5:30 p.m.
- Where: Musikfest Cafe (SteelStacks/SouthSide)
- Why: Charismatic front-man Lorenzo Bubba knows how to capture, and hold, an audience's attention. His band, Dear Anna, backs it up with a balls-to-the-wall, slam-you-over-the-head blitzkrieg of hard-hitting rock 'n' roll.
DAY 9 (SATURDAY, AUG. 12): THE INSIDIOUS RAYS
- When: 11 p.m.
- Where: TD Community Stage (SteelStacks/SouthSide)
- Why: A true Lehigh Valley supergroup, news of The Insidious Rays' 2016 reunion reverberated throughout the area's music scene with the glee of a thousand-and-one smiling emojis. The band fuses together elements of surf rock, grunge, reggae, punk and country -- a potent music cocktail you definitely want to savor with each sip.
DAY 10 (SUNDAY, AUG. 13): BUTTERJIVE
- When: Noon, 1:30 p.m.
- Where: Main Street (North Side)
- Why: Close out your Musikfest experience with a funky jam session courtesy of Valley veterans Butterjive.
