Mosey Beat singer-guitarist Taylor O'Connor wants listeners to have their musical cake -- or, in this case, ice cream -- and eat it, too.

The band's new full-length effort, Flight, allows them to do just that.

"We're trying to make it like an ice cream sundae. You want the Jim Dandies, you want the chocolate syrup, whip cream and cherry," O'Connor said earlier this week during a phone interview. "We like to mix flavors in our music."

Flight comes off of the heels of the Phillipsburg-based quartet's EP of the same name. The album builds on the eclectic structural template they established on their EP; smoothly blending splashes of funk, prog, jazz and reggae into a well-balanced architecture.

O'Connor said a shared appreciation for spontaneity and swirling styles is the fuel that fuels their creative engine. He said the addition of bassist Dave Abraham and keyboardist Dustin Napoli have added new depth to their sound.

"They definitely seem to enjoy improv as much as (drummer) Blair (O'Connor) and I do," Taylor O'Connor said. "Dustin and Dave coming in allowed us to hit (different) genres and make sense of those genres; it allowed us to expand more as a whole."

Taylor O'Connor said he is particularly proud of the song "Intergalactic Funk," which he said initially started out as a bridge section from the song "Miso Soup"; the latter initially intended to flow into the tune "Just Another Space Cadet."

"We really created a track in the moment that was able to keep everything together," he said. "I always try to reach my mind as far as it can go and find something interesting to talk about."

Following back-to-back performances at Musikfest, Mosey Beat will maintain a busy August schedule. Catch the band Friday at Lost Tavern Brewing in Hellertown; Aug. 17 at the Funhouse in Bethlehem; Aug. 26 at Spuds and Suds Festival in Bath and Pearly Baker's Alehouse in Easton.
