Photographer Adam Atkinson is hoping others in the Lehigh Valley will "Listen" by looking at what is in front of them.
"Listen" is a photography exhibition featuring candid portraits and images taken by Atkinson. The opening reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the State Theatre's Easton Hospital Gallery. "Listen" will be displayed through Jan. 24.
The title of the exhibition, "Listen," was derived from the term "Elderism," Atkinson explains in a news release, adding that he has long been fascinated by the wisdom and knowledge found in stories told to him by his elders. He started the projected in October 2014.
"The idea that someone, by virtue of having lived longer, has gained more experience and knowledge. That knowledge can be passed down to a younger generation. However, if the generation isn't listening, we lose that knowledge," Atkinson says. "I, personally, never got to know everything I wanted to about my own grandparents and will always regret that. It is my hope, and goal, that this project will help restore the process of passing down knowledge from one generation to the next."
The State Theatre also announced in the release the return of its popular Behind the Curtain Photography Workshop. Participants of the program -- scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 21 -- will be given uninterrupted access to unique and ornate components of the historic theater, the release states, including rarely seen artifacts and "Behind the Curtain" architecture. To register for the workshop, visit statetheatre.org/events/photography-workshop. Space is limited.
Photos from the 2014 workshop are on display in the theater's Easton Hospital Gallery Annex through Dec. 12.
